Time : 2026-08-18

Unlock the secret to keeping your gorgeous lengths looking fresh, lustrous and long lasting with a few simple steps. We believe that the more you care, the better your hair - and that includes your extensions!

How long do extensions last?

The answer to how long your hair extensions should last depends on a number of factors including type of extension, its application and how they have been cared for.

Additional to how you care for your extensions, this timeline also depends on your lifestyle and your natural hair growth cycle. But the key to keeping them looking salon-fresh is treating them with the same love and attention you’d give your own hair - if not more.

Tips for making your hair extensions last longer

● Keep your maintenance appointments

Make sure to attend your regular salon check-ups as recommended by your hairdresser. These aren’t just for touch ups - they’re essential for keeping your hair extensions healthy, secure, and looking fresh.

Regular maintenance appointments should take place around every 8 weeks for all methods

● Avoid chlorine, sea salt & sun damage

Chlorine, saltwater, and prolonged sun exposure can dry out your extensions, cause fading, or even discolouration. If you must swim, tie your hair up, rinse immediately, and refresh with a hair conditioning spray. And don’t forget your leave in heat protection for sunny days!

● Dry hair thoroughly, always

Never go to sleep with wet extensions. If you do, you’re sure to experience tangles, matting, and breakage. Ensure your hair is completely dry before you go to bed!

● Tie up before bed in a gentle style

Before turning in, loosely braid your hair or tie it into a ponytail, bun, or plait. This keeps it protected and tangle free overnight. Silk or satin pillowcases work wonders too by reducing friction.

● Use recommended products

Stick to shampoo, conditioner, and styling products that are recommended by your hair extension supplier. Make sure you steer clear of oils, gels, mousses and sprays that haven’t been approved as they can weaken your extensions and can cause product build-up.

Choose products that are sulphate free, alcohol free, and hydrating. Look for keywords like “lightweight,” “extension safe,” or “colour safe” on the products.

● Brush with care

Always brush from the ends upward, gently untangling knots before they become a problem. Use an extension-specific brush, and support the hair at the roots to avoid tugging at the bonds.

● Wash wisely

Your extensions don’t receive oils from your scalp, so overwashing can lead to dryness and dullness. We recommend washing just 2–3 times a week or as needed, depending on your lifestyle, and avoid shampooing the lengths, focusing mostly on the roots.

● Condition precisely

Use conditioner only on the mid lengths and ends. Never apply it on the bonds or roots. For deeper nourishment, treat your locks to a deep conditioner every 1–2 weeks, avoiding the attachment points.

● Be gentle with heat styling

Frequent use of hot tools can weaken your extensions. When styling, always apply a heat protectant and opt for low to medium heat. When possible, embrace heat-free styling options like overnight heatless curls.

● Separate extensions daily

All types of extensions can mat quickly if bonds are not separated. Part and gently separate them once a day to keep them neat and tangle-free. Your hairdresser can show you the method that works best for your fitting style.

● Don’t tint, tone, or silver shampoo without consultation

Using colour treatments or silver shampoos on your extensions can cause irreversible damage. When in doubt, leave it to the professionals - your hairdresser will thank you!
